Microwave Fun

As I went to heat up my lunch today at work, I ordered the microwave to cook for one minute. Specifically, I keyed up "1:oo," or "one, zero, zero."

After doing so, it occured to me that it would have been ever-so-slightly more efficient to type in ":60." "Six, zero." One press fewer.

Yeah, it's a negligible difference. But it is more efficient, isn't it? I mean, if it doesn't really make a difference, you could do it either way...but if we agree it doesn't make any difference, why not do it the better way?

I may be sligtly insane. But I think my wife is very sane, and I recall a past microwave incident that makes me think that she thinks the same way. The conversation went like this, starting with me:

"How long did you put this in [the microwave] for?"

"33 seconds."

"33?"

"Yeah."

And I knew exactly what she was up to...

"Did you do it for 33 because you basically wanted to do a 30 second microwave job, but making it 33 allowed you to avoid moving your finger to another button?"

"Yeah."

So...it's not just me.

The funny thing, though, is that my food didn't even cook for the whole minute today. It's quite common that I pull the snacks out impatiently before the bell rings. Sometimes quite a bit early. I find that funny because I am old enough to remember when microwaves weren't commonplace in the household and when my family fist got one, I recall thinking it was nearly miraculous that you could heat up a hot dog—on a paper plate, with the bun—in a matter of 20 to 30 seconds. Seconds! It was amazing. And now, it's never fast enough.

You probably think that my impatience is the result of the decline of western civilization and the whole way we are used to getting everything (information, TV, etc.) on demand. But in truth, this is something that has nothing to do with that disturbing trend. It's much simpler than that...

I just like to eat.

Just as long as you don't punch in "666" instead of seven minutes... you may just open up a portal to hell and let loose unspeakable evil upon our decadent society......
